Cosmos & Psyche a la Meister Eckhart |
In a time of the Webb Telescope beaming light and pictures of the first galaxies into our living rooms, we might ask what would the mystics say and do? Eckhart would be
thrilled.
|
He writes that the human spirit …storms the firmament, and scales the heavens until it reaches the spirit that drives the heavens. As a result of heaven’s revolution, everything in the world flourishes and bursts into leaf. The spirit, however, is never satisfied; it presses on ever further into the vortex (or whirlpool) and primary source in which the spirit has its

By speaking of the flourishing into leaf of everything in the world,
Eckhart is praising what we now call photosynthesis, which is indeed a marriage of the sun and plants. But he is saying more in this amazing passage, so filled with energy and verve. He declares, along with geologist Thomas
Berry, that ecology is functional cosmology. |

Ecological and cosmological awarenesses are in tandem. And the opposite is also true: to ignore the cosmos is to ignore ecology and Earth survival. |
Eckhart agrees with Aquinas’ observation that humans are capable of the universe: If God had made a thousand heavens and a thousand earths the human soul could well grasp them by its power. Eckhart thinks cosmologically. He frequently addresses the “all” of creation. |
With his love God gives all creatures their being and life, and maintains them with his love… Should anyone ask what God is, this is what I would say now: that God is love, and in fact so loveable that all creatures seek to love

So much is God with love, and so loveable, that everything that can love must love Him, whether they will to do so or not. To be

Meister Eckhart: A Mystic-Warrior For Our
Time While Matthew Fox recognizes that Meister Eckhart has influenced thinkers throughout history, he also wants to introduce Eckhart to today’s activists addressing contemporary crises. Toward that end, Fox creates
dialogues between Eckhart and Carl Jung, Thich Nhat Hanh, Rabbi Heschel, Black Elk, Karl Marx, Rumi, Adrienne Rich, Dorothee Soelle, David Korten, Anita Roddick, Lily Yeh, M.C. Richards, and many others. “Matthew Fox is perhaps the greatest writer on Meister Eckhart that has ever existed. (He) has successfully bridged a gap between Eckhart as a
shamanistic personality and Eckhart as a post-modern mentor to the Inter-faith movement, to reveal just how cosmic Eckhart really is, and how remarkably relevant to today’s religious crisis! ” — Steven Herrmann, Author of Spiritual
