Medieval Mystics on the Cosmic Christ & Sacredness of Nature 02/18/2023 |
We are exploring the implications of today’s science that has intellectually slain the dualism of spirit and matter that has haunted much of Western history. How light = matter =
Spirit. |
And how the modern era, suffering a regrettable amnesia about the archetype of the Cosmic Christ (Buddha Nature and Image of God) that renders all beings full of doxa and splendor
and the divine presence among us. And how recovering this almost lost archetype can--if it is not too late already--save the Earth and our own species along with it.
Let us consider some teachings from the creation spirituality mystics of the Middle Ages about the Cosmic Christ. It is God whom human beings know in every creature. (Hildegard of Bingen,
1098-1179) |
| All praise be yours, my Lord, through all that you have made, And first my Lord Brother Sun,
Who brings the day; and light you give to us through him.
How beautiful he is, how radiant in all his splendor!

Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. (Francis of Assisi, 1181-1226) Each creature’s beauty is a witness to the divine wisdom...Every creature participates in some way in the likeness of the Divine Essence....The Incarnation accomplished the following: That God became human and that humans became God and sharers in the divine nature. (Thomas Aquinas, 1224-1274) |
Each of us is a mirror of eternal contemplation, with a reflection that must surely be that of the living Son of God with all his works. (Mechtild of Magdeburg) God is constantly speaking only one thing. God’s speaking is one thing. Once upon a time, when women were birds, there was the simple understanding that to sing at dawn and to sing at dusk was to heal the world through joy. The birds still remember what we have forgotten, that the world is meant to be celebrated. ― Terry Tempest Williams, When Women Were Birds: Fifty-four Variations on Voice. Photo

The Coming of the
Cosmic Christ: The Healing of Mother Earth and the Birth of a Global Renaissance
In what may be considered the most comprehensive outline of the Christian paradigm shift of our Age, Matthew Fox eloquently foreshadows the manner in which the spirit of Christ resurrects in terms of the return to an earth-based mysticism, the expression of creativity, mystical sexuality, the respect due the young, the rebirth of effective forms of worship—all
of these mirroring the ongoing blessings of Mother Earth and the recovery of Eros, the feminine aspect of the Divine. “The eighth wonder of the world…convincing proof that our Western religious tradition does indeed have the depth of imagination to reinvent its faith.” — Brian Swimme, author or The Universe Story and Journey of the Universe.
