Men on the Once Supreme Court Embarrass Themselves Anew 04/29/2024
|
One lawyer called it a “dark day” for the rule of law. Another called it an “embarrassment.” Another suggested that we move the Supreme Court to the RNC Headquarters because that is whom SCOTUS is now serving. |
One justice, overcome with his own importance, proclaimed that they were destined to write an opinion for the ages. Another, the same one who invoked two witch-burning lawyers from 17th-century England to support the decision he wrote that killed Roe v. Wade, was worried that presidents of the future might start a coup if they did not have more immunity. But like his brethren, he ignored the case in front of them, that of the previous president who actually did launch a coup against the government. That coup killed 7 people, including police protecting the Capitol from rioters chanting “kill the vice president” while |

threatening all lawmakers. The first such effort to deny a peaceful transition of power in 248 years of our country. Not content with wrecking many women’s lives by demanding that 10-year-olds victims of rape and incest carry their fetus to term; not content with sadistically threatening
the lives of women with complicated pregnancies, the same gang is now eager to end the Constitution as we know it. |
Former US Attorney Joyce Vance describes the presidential immunity claim as a “messy argument.” Video by MSNBC. | They seek to introduce a word—“immunity" for presidents—that is not
found in the Constitution. (Previously they argued that the word “abortion” is not in the Constitution.) Only two hours and 24 minutes into the proceedings was the issue at hand mentioned. To her credit, it |
came from Justice Barrett: “The special counsel has expressed some concern for speed and wanting to move forward.” Is all the preening self-adulation of the adolescent male judges merely a smokescreen to deny voters the right to see before they vote, all the evidence gathered on a former president who staged
a coup? |
Are these so-called judges deliberately denying voters access to facts that a trial would reveal, about whether to return that president to office? One solution to this sordid court beckons us: Vote this fall and get others to vote, to elect represen- |

tatives committed to democracy and rule of law and a new Supreme Court (an expanded one if necessary). Despair is a luxury. Work is a necessity. To
be continued. |

Queries for Contemplation |
What are your reflections and responses to the Supreme Court event about presidential immunity last Thursday? How do you see it affecting your vote and your desire to assist others to vote next November? |
Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society
Visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology of evil
that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In comparing the Eastern tradition of the 7 chakras to the Western tradition of the 7 capital sins, Fox allows us to think creatively about our capacity for personal and institutional evil and what we can do about them. “A scholarly
masterpiece embodying a better vision and depth of perception far beyond the grasp of any one single science. A breath-taking analysis.” — Diarmuid O’Murchu, author of Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics |
