Yesterday we meditated on Deep Ecumenism, Spiritual Warriorhood, and Humankind’s Future and how all of us on earth have been called to stand up and be counted today. This is according to Chief Arvol Looking Horse. And how that takes strength, conscience, and confidence or trust, according to Thomas Aquinas. |
Speaking of conscience and spiritual warriorhood, I think we have a conscience emergency in America today—especially in Congress. I am speaking of what happened on Friday when only three Republicans had the courage to vote down a candidate for Defense Secretary who was |
Senators Mitch McConnell (KY), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Susan Collins (ME), the only three Republicans to vote against the approval of Pete Hegseth as defense secretary, forcing a vice-presidential tie-breaker vote. Official photos from Wikipedia. |
clearly unqualified for the job and a danger to the world. A man who is weak in character, abusive to women, an alcoholic, who had failed at running two modest-sized organizations and had never run a large one, who is hostile to gays, lesbians, and trans people in the armed services even in a
time when recruitment is becoming more difficult. Three Republicans had the inner strength to vote No. One more was needed. Crickets. One thinks of Iowa Senator Joni Ernst who was in the armed service herself and who initially offered doubts about the candidate’s
credentials. |
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last speech, April 3, 1968: “I’ve seen the Promised Land.” He was assassinated the next day. Smithsonian Channel | But the fierce right-wing attack machine
promised to primary her in her next election. And she backed down. Thus, no warrior there. Only bluff. And fear. Fear of losing her job in a few years. Is that an excuse for packing up one’s conscience? For putting the entire country and even the world into grave
danger |
because a seriously flawed human being is in charge of the largest employer in the nation and has his hands night and day on the buttons that can destroy the world? MLK Jr, who was a spiritual warrior, was once asked how he could march where people wanted to kill him and he responded: “One must love something more than the
fear of death if one is to live.” Senator Ernst is not even being threatened with death but with possibly losing her cushy job. And she runs away frightened and is A-okay with putting the entire world into danger. Because she might lose her job.
|
(When I stood up to some lies going on in my church, I lost my job of 34 years. It was not the end of the world for me. There are worse things than losing one’s job. One is selling one’s soul.) Ernst is only one Republican sans a conscience. Only one not willing to give up her
cushy claim to power. There are 50 others. |

Shame, Shame, Shame. And the defense head is only one issue to vote on. Others include destroying the planet. Destroying Social Security for seniors and medical care for everyone (except rich billionaires). Releasing violent fanatics from the January 6 insurrection so they can roam our streets and cities. And so much more. Conscience anyone? |

The Pope’s War offers a

The final section in the book focuses on birthing a truly catholic Christianity. “This book should be read by everybody, not only for its ferocious courage, but also for its vision for what needs to be saved from the destructive forces that threaten authentic Christianity.” ~ Andrew Harvey, author
of The Hope. “In the gripping The Pope’s War, Matthew Fox takes an unwavering look at the layers of corruption in the Catholic Church, holding moral truth against power.” — Jason Berry, author of Vows of Silence: The Abuse of Power in the Papacy of John Paul II |

Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election Matthew Fox tells us
that he had always shied away from using the term “Anti-Christ” because it was so often used to spread control and fear. However, given today’s rise of authoritarianism and forces of democracide, ecocide, and christofascism, he turns the tables in this book employing the archetype for the cause of justice, democracy, and a renewed Earth and humanity. Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society
Visionary theologian and best-selling
author Matthew Fox offers a new theology of evil that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In comparing the Eastern tradition of the 7 chakras to the Western tradition of the 7 capital sins, Fox allows us to think creatively about our capacity for personal and institutional evil and what we can do about them. “A scholarly masterpiece embodying a better vision and depth of perception far beyond the grasp of any one single science. A breath-taking analysis.” — Diarmuid O’Murchu, author of Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics |
|
One River, Many Wells: Wisdom Springing from Global Faiths
Matthew Fox calls on all the world traditions for their wisdom and their inspiration in a work that is far more
than a list of theological position papers but a new way to pray—to meditate in a global spiritual context on the wisdom all our traditions share. Fox chooses 18 themes that are foundational to any spirituality and demonstrates how all the world spiritual traditions offer wisdom about each.“Reading One River, Many Wells is like entering the rich silence of a masterfully directed retreat. As you read this text, you reflect, you pray, you embrace Divinity. Truly no words can fully
express my respect and awe for this magnificent contribution to contemporary spirituality.” –Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit |

The Hidden Spirituality of Men: Ten Metaphors to Awaken the Sacred Masculine
To awaken what Fox calls “the sacred masculine,” he unearths ten metaphors,
or archetypes, ranging from the Green Man, an ancient pagan symbol of our fundamental relationship with nature, to the Spiritual Warrior….These timeless archetypes can inspire men to pursue their higher calling to connect to their deepest selves and to reinvent the world. “Every man on this planet should read this book — not to mention every woman who wants to understand the struggles, often unconscious, that
shape the men they know.” — Rabbi Michael Lerner, author of The Left Hand of God |
